Dr. Abby Brewer-Johnson is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist specializing in the psychological treatment of children, adolescents and young adults with a range of socio-emotional problems. She offers parenting consultations, child therapy, adult therapy, group and family sessions. Known to her clients as “Dr. Abby”, she is respected for her strong diagnostic and clinical skills incorporating an empathic, practical, playful and relational approach to psychotherapy with clients and their families. Her treatment is relationship based and incorporates current research in neuroscience, developmental psychology and attachment theory. With extensive training and experience in the field of psychology and social services, Dr. Abby has worked with children with a range of socio-emotional, developmental and behavioral problems at nearly every stage of development. In addition to her private practice, her diverse experience includes work in such settings as university counseling centers, an outpatient treatment center for trauma counseling, and a state funded program implementing services for children with developmental disabilities and their families. She earned her doctoral degree from the California School of Professional Psychology and completed internships at Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego State University and Community Research Foundation. During graduate school, she was involved in a reproductive trauma research group and conducted her own research exploring the experience of parents of children with Autism. She continues to pursue advanced training at the San Diego Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; however, her most valued training is ongoing and comes from the many lessons learned parenting her two children.
