Dr. Sandra Kahn is an accomplished orthodontist with a notable career spanning several decades. Originally from Mexico, she graduated from the School of Stomatology at the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree. She then earned a Master’s degree in Orthodontics from the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, California.

Dr. Kahn’s professional journey began with her work in physical anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, focusing on human craniofacial growth and development. She subsequently served on numerous craniofacial anomalies panels at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and Stanford University. Her expertise earned her an adjunct clinical professorship at Stanford University in the Department of Craniofacial Anomalies at Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital.

After over 20 years in private practice and treating approximately 7,000 clinical patients, Dr. Kahn transitioned from traditional orthodontics to airway-centered orthodontics. This approach emphasizes the harmony of the jaws and aims to guide the growth of the face and jaws in children, improving breathing and sleep health to prevent conditions like snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Dr. Kahn has been invited to speak at many prestigious university hospitals around the world. Her research includes the use of implants in orthopedic traction Bollard hooks, Biobloc Orthotropics therapy for treating dental and orthopedic decompensation in patients with cleft lip and palate, and the prevention of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea through Forwardontics combined with myopostural therapy.

Together with Dr. Paul Ehrlich and their team at Stanford University, Dr. Kahn coined the term “Forwardontics” to promote protocols that support forward development of the facial middle and lower thirds. She is the only Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics practicing Forwardontics therapy.

Dr. Kahn is a prolific author, having written several influential books. Her first book, “Let’s Face It – A Guide to Your Child’s Optimal Health, Facial, and Dental Development,” serves as a consultation guide for parents aiming to prevent pediatric respiratory problems. Her subsequent works, including “GOPex – Good Oral Posture Exercises,” “Jaws: The Story of a Hidden Epidemic” co-authored with Dr. Paul Ehrlich, and “Breathe 4.0: The Magic of Up-lock Breathing” co-authored with Dr. Wilfried Engelke, continue to make significant contributions to the field. According to the WHO around 74% of deaths are as a result of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) and - barring genetics and trauma - ALL have their origin in compensations that we make in order to survive our environment. The role in IIOPE is to identify and correct these compensations right at the start - going back to conception and gestation - as well as birth and early childhood - and prevent the mild dysfunction from becoming symptomatic and then chronic. ABOUT OUR GUEST

Roger Price’s career began in the mid 1950s in South Africa where he started his studies as a Pharmacist at Rhodes University.

As a qualified Pharmacist with an Honours degree in Physiology and Pharmacology, he then went on to qualify as a Clinical Nutritionist and Remedial Massage Therapist. He studied further in the behavioural and psychological aspects of ill health and soon moved away from mainstream medicine as he realised that it had nothing to do with health at all.

More than 20 years ago he started to challenge the way that sleep disorders were being addressed and introduced the concept of Airway Management to the world of Dentistry.

The name Roger Price is synonymous with Breathing Disordered Sleep - the prime reason that people are continuously tired, lack concentration, develop all kinds of chronic conditions and simply do not get better.

Katie Ferraro is Registered Dietitian and mom of seven specializing in baby-led weaning. In 2016, she created the original 100 First Foods approach to starting solid foods with baby-led weaning. Through her workshops, podcast, courses, and digital content, she has helped tens of thousands of families give their babies a safe start to solid foods using the alternative to conventional, adult-led spoon-feeding known as baby-led weaning. Teaching families, daycare providers, and healthcare practitioners how to do baby-led weaning safely is her passion. Katie is a Nutrition Instructor at the University of California San Diego Extended Studies and a Lecturer in the Exercise and Nutrition Science department at San Diego State University. He graduated from UCLA Dental School and Medical School and received his specialty certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery from UCLA. Dr. Gunson partnered with Dr. G. Dr. Barry Raphael has been a specialist in orthodontics since 1983 but had a change of heart and mind in 2008 when he learned that Soft Tissue Dysfunction is THE cause of malocclusion. Since that time he has included helping children and adults achieve an optimal physiologic airway and breathing pattern as a primary goal of his treatment with the straightening of teeth as a secondary "icing-on-the-cake" outcome. He labeled his practice in Clifton, New Jersey, as the Raphael Center for Integrative Orthodontics in 2014. Dr. Stanley Liu, MD, DDS is an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology, and by courtesy, of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the former director of the Stanford Sleep Surgery Fellowship, and preceptor to the Stanford Oculoplastic Surgery Fellowship. After graduating from Stanford University with a degree in Biology, Dr. Liu received medical and dental degrees from the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF). He was a former Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Research Scholar and spent a year at the NIH. After oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at UCSF, he completed the Stanford sleep surgery fellowship in 2014 with the Department of Otolaryngology and sleep surgery pioneer Dr. Robert Riley. Dr. Liu practices the full scope of sleep apnea surgery including nasal, palate, tongue base, hypoglossal nerve stimulation, genioglossus advancement, and maxillomandibular advancement (MMA). He introduced adult maxillary expansion (DOME) for OSA with Professor Christian Guilleminault in 2015, and has continued to update the comprehensive sleep surgery protocol at Stanford. He is also routinely referred patients who need complex facial trauma reconstruction and orthognathic surgery. Dr. Liu's active areas of research include clinical phenotyping to optimize sleep surgery outcome, virtual surgical planning for facial skeletal surgery, and neuromodulation of the upper airway. He has given keynote talks nationally and internationally at preeminent conferences across specialties. He has published over 90 scientific articles and medical texts, with original scientific work on sleep surgery.

Nicole Goldfarb, M.A. CCC, SLP- COM® is a Speech-Language Pathologist, Certified Orofacial Myologist, an International speaker, author, Ambassador for the Breathe Institute, a Talk Tools educational partner, and has served on the faculty for the Sleep Education Consortium and Airway, Sleep, and Pediatrics Pathway (ASAP) program.

Nicole has completed over 50 presentations nationally and internationally to medical and dental professionals, graduate school residents, and the general public on orofacial myofunctional therapy as it relates to sleep-disordered breathing in both children and adults.

She is the author of a 2023 article in Dental Sleep Practice Magazine “Why Every Dentist and Orthodontist Should Have an Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist on Their Team”.

Nicole also wrote an article for Sleep World Magazine for sleep MDs, respiratory technicians, and other sleep specialists titled “How to Restore Proper Rest: How orofacial myofunctional therapy can aid in the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing”, published 8/2024.

She is also the author of a two-part chapter on orofacial myofunctional therapy in a medical textbook “Growing Into Breathing Problems: The Collaborative Quest For Lifetime Solutions” with the world renowned editors Dr. David Gozal, MD, Dr. Bill Harrell (orthodontist), and Dr. David McIntosh (ENT).

Nicole is the author of a children’s book series “The Adventures of Captain Airway and Mr. Mighty Mouth”, helping to bring airway insight to young children, their parents, teachers, and other medical professionals.

She is on the Child Airway Initiative Task Force (CAST), which is a national team of doctors, dentists, and orthodontists developing a universal screening tool for all dentists to use to screen patients for sleep-disordered breathing as per the 10/2017 American Dental Association proposal that all dentists should screen all patients for sleep-disordered breathing.

Nicole is the owner of San Diego Center For Speech Therapy & Myofunctional Therapy. She currently serves as a mentor and consultant to patients, professionals, and colleagues nationally and internationally in the field of orofacial myofunctional therapy. Nicole combines her background and skills in Psychology, Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology to provide effective and result-based evaluations, therapy, consultations, and mentorship for children and adults of all ages. She has a special passion and interest in sleep-disordered breathing and diagnosing restricted frenums as they relate to myofunctional disorders. Nicole’s life-long quest is to help in the early identification and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing and airway issues.
